What is spyware?
Any software that covertly gathers user information through the
user's Internet connection without his or her knowledge, usually
for advertising purposes. Spyware applications are typically
bundled as a hidden component of freeware or shareware programs
that can be downloaded from the Internet. Once installed, the
spyware monitors user activity on the Internet and transmits
that information in the background to someone else.
Spyware can also gather information about e-mail
addresses and even passwords and credit card numbers. Also
called adware.
Free programs, also known as 'freeware, such as Ad-aware &
Spybot are generally not a good long term solution for getting
rid of spyware.
Ad-Aware- real time spyware blocking is not effective. It will
catch most spyware programs
after they have installed themselves
though. There also is no ability to schedule regular scans,
and
you cannot restore individual quarantined items. al-time
protection alerts interfere with computer
usage. Little
information about found threats.
